International Students and their spouses/families who are or will be living in the UK for more than 6 months are entitled to treatment under the British National Health Service (NHS) provided they did not come to the UK with the aim of receiving medical treatment. They are entitled to free treatment in NHS hospitals and may register as a patient with a General Practitioner (GP) - please see below for details on how to register.
Students from the European Economic Area (EEA) or from a country with a reciprocal health care agreement are entitled to receive NHS treatment irrespective of the length of their course.
National Health Service (NHS) If you are entitled to NHS treatment the following outlines the types of services which are free and those which you may need to pay for.
Free of charge:
- Consulting a GP
- Emergency and non-emergency treatment in a hospital
Charges apply for:
- Medicines prescribed by your GP (if over 25)
- Some GP services (eg. vaccinations)
- Dental treatment
- Optical treatment

How to register with a GP International students who are here for more than 6 months may register with a GP at any time during their studies in the UK. Details on registering with a GP during Enrolment and Induction weeks are available from the Student Welfare Officer. When registering with a GP students should take their passport and proof of student status with them.
